Making a Claim After a Storm
A six-step guide to making a property claim less stressful during the recovery process.
If a hurricane damages your home, hotel, or commercial property, a clear process makes the claim faster and less stressful. Here is how we guide our clients through it.
Six steps to a smoother claim
- Make the premises safe. Once Emergency Services give the all-clear, start cleaning up and carry out any temporary repairs needed to make your premises safe.
- Document the damage. Photograph all property damage and, where possible, share GPS coordinates (a location pin via WhatsApp). This helps the loss adjusters sent by the insurer.
- Keep your records. Keep an accurate record of the cost of any emergency repairs to submit to your insurer, and keep damaged equipment and items safe for inspection.
- Wait for inspection before permanent repairs. Insurers must be allowed to inspect and agree the damage before any permanent repairs are carried out.
- Notify Tomlin as soon as you can. There is usually a set time period to notify insurers after a hurricane. Tell us about any damage as early as possible and we will help you complete the forms quickly.
- Get repair estimates. Begin requesting estimates for repairs to the damaged property so the claim can move forward.
